I always start my first real programming units that have more complex algorithms (not just arrow blocks) by playing the PBJ game. Of course, due to allergies, it has become the Jam Game, but it still yields the same results. Kids learn that a computer basically is not very smart but can complete algorithm tasks faster than humans, but they require the smarts of the human programmer to function properly.

This is a free iPad app. There is not an online version at this time. This app is a precursor to the Scratch online program created by MIT.
Grades 5-6

Code.org also has lessons for as young as Grade 1 through high school. Create an educator account and you can set up classes for your students so you can watch their progress and have them share projects in private studios.

Khan academy has a lot of resources for independent learning of math and programming, but can be used as a resource for practice of the skills - Javascipt and HTML are great programming languages for middle school-age students to learn.
